Maria and Ubaldo travel up the East Coast

We really love travelling! This post is about our second trip on the East Coast of Queensland. If you want to know about the first trip you can check out the link below.

We were very lucky again, because we were able to find a great deal to travel again for a cheap price. Like the last time, we hired a car to do our trip but this time was a new experience for us. We took a campervan, which is a car and accommodation at the same time. Inside the car you have beds, a bathroom, kitchen and sometimes, if you are lucky, a TV! It was very different; we spent most of the time inside the car.

This time, we have travelled north, from Brisbane to Cairns. On our first day we visited the Gold Coast, which is a city one hour south from Brisbane by car. There we just rested all day at Surfers Paradise Beach and during the night we had a barbecue with some friends. On the next day we went diving on North Stradbroke Island, which is one of the islands near Brisbane. We saw some Grey Nurse Sharks, they are critically endangered and are not very easy to see on the East Coast.

On Monday, we visited Moreton Island, which is another island nearby Brisbane. There we went snorkelling at The Tangalooma Wrecks, which is made from 12 sunken boats. Originally Queensland’s Government sank the boats just to create a mooring area, however the marine life created an artificial reef there. We definitely recommend this place for snorkelling or diving. After that, at the end of the day, we participated in the dolphin feeding, which is one of the most popular activities on the island, but we didn’t like it so much.

On the next day we went diving at the EX HMAS Brisbane, which is a military wreck. Before being sunk this ship was a decommissioned guided missile destroyer of the Royal Australian Navy. The ship participated in both the Vietnam and Gulf wars! This is a special dive because you don’t need previous wreck diving experience to dive there.

During the next 2 days we went to Noosa Heads, Rainbow Beach and Airlie Beach. Although, we were looking for lazy moments, on the first day we did a walking trail at The Noosa National Park, from Sunshine Beach to Noosa Main Beach, which was roughly 7 km. On the way we saw a lot of beautiful places and after we finished, we felt so tired, but it was worth it. The rest of that day we just sunbathed at Main Beach and Little Cove Beach. In Rainbow Beach, we visited the Carlo Sand Blow and The Coloured Sands and took many pictures.

On Friday night we drove as far as Cape Hillsborough which is a National Park where you can see wild kangaroos and wallabies eating they breakfast on the beach during the sunrise, but if you are not a morning person or you oversleep, forget it, because you must wake up early in the morning, around 4:30 am. On Saturday, after our breakfast with the marsupials, we had our last chance to lie down on the beach, so we visited the Whitsundays. There we just rested at Whitehaven Beach.

Finally, on Sunday we went to Billabong Sanctuary near Townsville. At the wildlife park we fed some kangaroos, cassowaries and koalas. We saw the crocodiles feeding and we petted some different animals like wombats, snakes and lizards.

We would like to thank the staff of Lake 67 for helping us to book the tours and dives.
