A traditional Indian wedding

As part of their weekly speaking assessment, CCEB students are sometimes asked to prepare PowerPoint presentations on various topics. Last week, Intermediate B were studying wedding traditions and they had to make a presentation about weddings in their own or other countries. Aoi and Haruka (both from Japan) researched a traditional Indian wedding (see the presentation below):

Hello. My name is Aoi Yoshida.

This is a report about a typical Indian wedding.

Firstly, I am going to write some general information. In India, marriage is thought the greatest event in life. The cost of marriage is about four times annual income. A professional sets the date for a wedding. The wedding season is between October to February. That is because summer is very hot. A wedding can last from 3 days to a week.

Secondly, I will tell you  about the clothes. Traditional Indian wedding dresses, which are called Sari, are believed to be the most glamorous and colorful wedding dresses in the world.

The traditional wedding color for brides is red and for grooms is white. However, it is changing now. Many brides like to consider different color for their wedding. Actually an Indian bride is expected to sparkle on her special day, so the Indian wedding dresses are usually very colorful with intricate designs and embroidery.

Next, let’s talk about ceremonies. Actually, there are many traditional ceremonies in India, and it is difficult to explain all of these. Therefore, we will just introduce some of them which we found interesting. The first ceremony is Baraat-Groom’s Parade. The groom rides on a white horse and heads for the wedding hall.

The next ceremony is Milni-Family Embrace and Greet. A relation on the bride’s side gives a jar to the groom. The groom breaks the jar using one foot. The meaning of this ceremony is to test whether the groom has enough power to last in marriage and to confront difficulties or not. In addition, people cannot see the bride until they make a vow, so before the bride enters, a cloth will be held up in front of them. Then the bride enters and they make a vow. Actually, during this traditional ceremony, the groom’s friends and the bride’s friends cannot meet. Therefore, they’re separated in different rooms.

Lastly, I am going to mention entertainment. Seki Beki is a popular game played as entertainment after the wedding. Everyone is looking for a ring. Milk, water, red dye, rings, and coins are put into the container. The game is played seven times. A legend says that people who can find more rings take the initiative in their married life.

In conclusion, anyone can attend an Indian wedding without any monetary gift or invitation. Therefore, if you have a chance, please attend such a wedding!!

Ps. I haven’t had enough time to search the topic. Many kinds of people live in India. In addition, these people believe in different religions. Therefore, there have many types of weddings. This report presents a mix of different wedding traditions. If you give me time, I can search for more information about an Indian wedding.

  1. This story was so interesting for me. I didn’t know that there is a wedding season in India. It`s because there is no wedding season in my country. And I think sari is such a traditional piece of clothing and absolutely gorgeous! Also so many ceremonies in India, especially the one when the Bride gives a jar to the groom who breaks it the using one foot. It is for testing whether the groom has enough power or not. I think that ceremony is unique.
