Memories of the traditional celebrations in the Czech Republic

Masopust – carnival

This is typical Slavic and Christian holiday. It occurs between Christmas and Easter.

Carnival was, for people in the past, an “official” holiday for feasting, drinking, dancing, singing… During the holidays it was necessary to get enough to eat. Then followed fasting. Fasting lasted for forty days.

Easter holiday – The Resurrection of Jesus

This is a nice spring holiday. Winter is ending and the time is coming for the new lives in the animal and human kingdoms. But before this young girls must be healthy. Boys take sprouts from young trees and from the sprouts they make a whip. The whip is used to hit girls’ bottoms. The boys have very cold water too and the water is poured on the girls. I think that this celebration is for a foreigner very uncommon but interesting.

Christmas time

I think that Christmas time in now a big holiday for shopping and eating. In the past this holiday had another meaning. Christmas time was time for feelings with family, with friends. This was time for being still and meditating. Unluckily in this busy time everything is different.

  1. At Easter, boys have the whip and hit girls’ bottoms? And boys have very cold water and pour it on girls? Wow! It is uncommon but awesome and interesting for me. I can find out about various customs around the world.
