How to travel around the world on a budget?

Have you ever thought about travelling around the world? If you love travelling, like most people do, you probably have. Usually, when people think about it, most of them think that to travel you need a lot of money! But, guess what-the good news is you don’t!

Basically, for travelling you have to consider two things: time and money, and they are related. Most of the time, you have only one of them. I mean, although on your vacations you have enough money for travelling because it’s a short trip, and you had saved money for a long time, often you don’t have time for a long trip.

Therefore, if you want to travel around the world on a budget you need time. That is the key! Another important tip is to choose your itinerary properly, considering the cost of living in each country and the seasons. For example, some countries such as the Scandinavian countries, The UK, Singapore, Switzerland are well-known for their high cost of living. One reliable source of information is numbeo.com which is a website continuously updated by locals of each city.

In a simple way, if we look at the map below. The more green points you choose, the cheaper your trip would be.

Once you have chosen the places to travel, always try to travel during the summer, which means less clothes to carry with you. Remember, it is easier to take a bus carrying  a small bag than big bags packed with clothes that you probably won’t use during the trip!

Bear in mind that time is the key to saving money! So, even though the popular saying is “Time is money”, always choose the cheapest option for transportation. I know that a two-hour flight instead of a 24-hour trip on a train could be very seductive, but remember in the end every single dollar saved is important.

Another important tip is to eat where the locals eat! This is true mainly in Asia and Latin America. There are tourist prices, obviously higher, and local prices. So, why no try local food where the locals eat? You will save money and try new flavors!

Finally, for accommodation, you can save money by doing Couch Surfing, or working for it. In this post Debora wrote about the subject (https://cceb.edublogs.org/2016/11/04/how-to-sleep-around-the-world-without-paying-anything/).

Following these tips you can travel around the world spending less than USD 20 a day or USD 600 in a month. That’s less than some people spend on monthly accommodation in Cairns!
