Japanese stories told by Kaho and Fumi

As part of their weekly speaking assessment, CCEB students are sometimes asked to prepare PowerPoint presentations on the chosen topic. Sometimes their teacher wants them to include the grammar point of the week in the presentations to encourage the students to practise their speaking AND grammar at the same time. For Kaho and Fumi from the Intermediate Class (both girls in the main picture above) the grammar point of the week was phrasal verbs (either in bold print or underlined in the text below).

Here are Kaho and Fumi with their Japanese stories! To understand their PowerPoint photo story, follow the transcript below.

1.There was an old village in Japan and there were an elderly man and a woman long years ago. One day he went up the hill to cut bamboos and she went to the river to do washing.

2. Then she found a huge peach in the river. She was very surprised and interested in it, so she picked it up.

3. She took it back and waited until he came back. After she chopped the big peach with him, a boy came into the world. They were really happy because they didn’t have their own children. They named the boy “Peach Boy”.

4. They took care of him and he grew up. He became very brave and active. And he liked playing outside. He could even talk with animals.

5. Unfortunately, one day there were devils destroying the village . They broke into villagers’ house and picked up their treasures. Seeing this accident, Peach Boy made up his mind to get rid of the devils living in an island.

6. After he told the old woman his decision, she gave him ‘kibidango’, which is a kind of Japanese rice ball.

7. On his way, he bumped into a dog that seemed brave, so asked,”I’m going to fight against devils. Can you keep up with me?” Then the dog replied,”OK, I will.” and followed him.

8. Moreover he met a monkey and a bird. He also asked them to follow him with kibidango. They answered “Of course!! Why not!!”

9. So Peach Boy could get good companions to get rid of devils, and headed for the island. They really got along with each other. Though it was stormy, they took on a boat without fears.

10. They got to the island and found devils. Everyone made the most of their own merits, and they fought off devils.

11. Finally they got back treasures originally owned by villagers because they beat devils. After coming back to their village, Peach Boy was praised for his courage and become famous.

12. Now we’re telling you another story. Once upon a time, there was an old man and an old woman who lived together happily. One day he went to the hill to cut down bamboo. And then, came upon shining bamboo.

13. He got very interested in the shining bamboo, so made up his mind to cut it. After that, amazingly a pretty tiny girl was appeared. He got to like her so picked her up.

14. When he got home, he told the old woman about the girl that he had come across. And they decided to bring her up. They named her ‘kaguyahime’.

15. Gradually the girl grew up. The bigger she became, the more beautiful she got. Her black hair grew so long. She was well known as the most beautiful girl in the world.

16. As she was well known, a lot of men called on her from around the world. And they asked her out, but she turned down their offers.

17. The rumour about the mysterious beautiful girl had spread around the nation, at last even the Emperor had heard. And he got interested in her so asked her out, but all the time she turned down his offer. Actually she was also falling love with him, though. There was a secret reason…

18. After that, she became less energetic little by little. Most of the days, she spent her time looking up at the moon. One day, she told the old man and the old woman that she was a person who lived on the moon. So she had to go to the moon.

19. All the men fascinated by her tried to shoot clouds that the messengers coming from the moon were boarding. But it was difficult to keep it away from the earth.

20. At midnight, suddenly all the men became sleepy and fell sound asleep. While they were sleeping, she went back to the moon. The news that she had gone back to the moon made everyone sad, especially the old man and the old woman.
