Teho Ropeyarn’s art

We want to describe a sculpture we saw at CIAF made by Teho Ropeyarn.

Teho Ropeyarn is an artist who is a direct descendant from the Injinoo Aboriginal Clans of Angkamuthi and Yadahikana Clans where the traditional stories are told through artistic practice. For us this work of art was the most expressive one on our visit to CIAF.

The sculpture is abstract. We think it is made of wood and plastic. It shows many hands on a red board. Most of the hands are black, however just two hands are white. The two white hands are in the centre of the board and many black hands surround them. This sculpture is intriguing because we don’t know the meaning of it .

It might be a symbol of racism between black and white people. Aboriginal people don’t want any discrimination; maybe this piece of art represents a sort of a struggle against racism.

This work of art impressed us a lot. Now we are more interested in the aboriginal culture.
