Travel to Brazil: Part 1 Jalapão

Hello guys,

My name is Paloma and I’m from Brazil. I had this crazy idea of leaving my country and coming to Australia to study English and try new experiences. I arrived in Cairns in January. Every day I learn something different but now I would like to show you something different about Brazil.

When you think Brazil, you surely think Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, maybe Bahia. But you know what? Brazil has amazing places to visit, and today I will share with you one of our secrets: a gorgeous city named Jalapão.

In Brazil we have 26 states in total and some cities are totally stunning. The name of the state I want to talk about is Tocantins. It is located in the center of Brazil and its capital is Palmas. Check out the map below to have a better understanding of its location:

Jalapão is an Ecological Reserve and you can only get there by truck (amazing adventure, right?) but you can also take the plane to Palmas, go to Ponte Alta (which is a better way) and drive a truck there for more 6 hours. And now you most likely gonna ask me: why 6 hours? Because you can’t exceed 50km/h as the road is not good (adventure!!!). Of course, you can go by a 4×4 car with private agencies. The map below gives you an idea of the size of the place:

Jalapão is famous for its geysers which are absolutely breathtaking. Currently, there are 20 geysers to visit but every now and then they discover another one.

Do you know what a geyser is? Imagine a lake in the river bed, surrounded by trees. You must now be thinking “This only happens in the Dead Sea”, but actually in this lake, you float because of the bubbles from the geyser, awesome right?

But there are other things that you can do in Jalapão, like hiking lots of trails where you can find different types of animals, trees, waterfalls and try a wide range of extreme sports.

The most popular places in Jalapão:

  1. Cachoeira da Formiga (Tingling Waterfall)

My tip: Take your snorkel mask (or swimming goggles), fill your lungs with air, hold your breath and enjoy watching the amazing underwater biodiversity up and close. And then glide down the rapids as many times as you want.

  1. Dunas do Jalapão (Jalapão Dunes)

My tip: Experience awesome sunsets, and see the whole Jalapão from this place. It’s pure magic.

  1. Serra do Espírito Santo

  1. Fervedouro Bela Vista (Bela Vista Geyser)

My tip: There are a lot of geysers in this lake; a unique experience that you can enjoy with your friends.

  1. Cachoeira da Velha (Old Woman Waterfall)

My tip: nature is wonderful…  see the tree hanging in the waterfall, which is unique. Admire the strength of this tree to stay there, in heavy rain. And… you can go rafting there, which can be a bit extreme.

  1. Fervedouro do Ceiça (Ceiça Geyser)

My tip: The strength of the geyser in this lake is awesome, so if it’s your first time, you can feel the pressure which can be scary but at the same time, a good experience.

Another important thing to mention, if you stay in a Camp from Korubo, you have to be aware that you are in the middle of the jungle, without light, surrounded by animals. So, sit on the ground, next to a river, look at the sky and star gaze. Gather with your friends around a bushfire, play the guitar and sing, dance, whatever you want to do, just enjoy that moment.

And do you think that’s all? Nooooo, have you heard of the television show Survivor? They recorded it in Jalapão, too!

And one last thing you need to see, check out the campsite and ecolodge:

I am sure now that you all want to visit this place. For more information, below you can find agencies that can take you there!
